Music Video Timeline

Music video timeline

50’s
In the 50’s music videos had just started to become popular because people realised that relating a song with visual it made people like the music more.

60’s
In the 60’s music videos became more popular when the Beatles and Elvis Presley started making music videos and create a fan base for artists.

70’s
In the late 70’s Top of The Pops was launched which had strict limits on the number of 'outsourced' videos TOTP could use. Therefore a good video would increase a song's sales as viewers hoped to see it again the following week. More bands were going global and couldn’t be everywhere at once so a recorded performance was sent top TOTP so it could be shown.

80’s
MTV was launched in the 80’s as a 24hour channel playing music videos. The first song played on air was ‘video killed the radio star’.

90’s
MTV began listing directors with the artist and song credits, reflecting the fact that music videos had increasingly become an auteur medium. This was the start for directors on the music timeline. Music videos became like mini films and more technology was used and cartoon affects.

00’s
The Ifilm website was launched which played music videos and you could shared files and music videos. In 2005 YouTube was launched which made the viewing of online video much faster and easier and some artists emerged through the internet on sites like MySpace, Google video, Yahoo video and Facebook because they was all showing music videos.
